DHL Turkish Grand Prix Preview

Two very special guests with join Peter in discussing the upcoming Turkish GP. Steve Hallam engineered Nigel Mansell at John Player Team Lotus before joining McLaren in 1991. Over the next 18 years he was a part of six World Championships - four Constructors' and two Drivers'. In a rare move for F1 engineers, Steve switched to NASCAR in 2009. He will be speaking to us from the North Carolina headquarters of Michael Waltrip Racing, where Steve is now Executive Vice-President for Competition. Joining Peter in the studio will be a very familiar guest to regular viewers and the author of the blog ScarbsF1, Craig Scarborough. Craig will be talking us through all the latest F1 technical developments to the background of more superb photographs from Sutton Images as well as his own, lucid drawings.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Michael Swansea

Are Williams’ most recent moves (dropping Hulkenburg for financial reasons, stock market floatation, change of technical staff etc.) signs of a team getting increasingly desperate and ever more unlikely to return to past glories?

teddy, porter ranch ca.

Would you like to see refueling to come back

Dimitris Papadopoulos | @f1enigma

Q to Scarbs : How hard is to ‘convert’ a normal rake car to a ‘high rake car’ like Ferrari tries to do. Thumbs up guys!

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Did Red Bull design their car so that even when it is at a relatively “level” setup, the floor is already raked?

Anthony, Bristol, UK | @funkmastabuzzf1

If Quali keeps making less importance should we bring back points for quai and to stop this “fuel saving” give a point for fastest laps

Anthony, Bristol, UK | @funkmastabuzzf1

Hi as I understand it Mclaren had a “trick” floor in pre-season that was unreliable if they can get it to work can they catch/beat Red Bull and can scarbs explain the differance between the two (apart from ones Carbon and ones titanium lol)Cheers Ant

Anthony, Bristol, UK | @funkmastabuzzf1

f Quali keeps making less importance should we bring back points for quai and to stop this “fuel saving” give a point for fastest laps

Mahek Mody from Mumbai India | @MahekMody

To ScarbsF1: Turkey is an anticlockwise circuit. What changes you think are made to the car for this reason? Do you think the contents of the left and right side-pods swapped because I have read somewhere there is always more flow in the other sidepod.

Matt USA

Steve Hallam, who was you favourite driver when at Mclaren and how do you see the transition of Ex Formula One drivers to Nascar.

Jono in Warwick | @jonolynn

I understand that the underfloor of the car accelerates the air creating a low pressure and hence downforce. But I don’t understand how blowing high pressure exhaust into the diffuser adds to the downforce can scarbs explain.
Thanks and I love the show, keep it up.

Felipe Velasquez, Chile | @fvelasquezm

@PeterDWindsor #TurkishGP #theflyinglap #F1 with rain, what do you expect about the Pirellis? i think DRS and KERS won’t be the key here.

mrbigstuff, Poland | @f1talks

@ScarbsF1 Could you tell us something more about new Red Bull KERS package?

Felipe from Chile | @fvelasquezm

If it rains, what do you expect about the Pirellis? i think DRS and KERS won’t be much of the key to win here. More skills and strategy of the drivers could be the key? Greetings from chile, Felipe.

Michael Li, Beijing, China | @motorsport_cn

@PeterDWindsor #theflyinglap #f1 Do you think you will see Niki Takeda in Istanbul?

Sini, Finland | @SiniF1

What do you think, will the Pirelli tyres be in trouble because of turn 8?

Dead Man Woking USA

The regulations DO NOT ALLOW more than 60% scale wind tunnel testing except for days traded for straight line testing during the season.

alex in sweden | @F1RSD

will this ride height on the redbull change with the movement of the KERS battery, newey has now moved it from under gear box due to over heating problems,

Tom Millard | @twitter.com/tommillard

Does Scarbs forsee any embarrassing durability issues for Pirelli this weekend given the demands of Turn Eight? Lewis’s style necessitated a three-stop race back in ’08 so could we even see some drivers run out of tyres on Sunday?

Kushagra, Fort Lauderdale, FL | @kushagrap

I am curious to know, where and when was the picture taken hanging in the studio behind Craig?

teddy, porter ranch ca.

The bottom of the mp4-26 rear wing endplate sports horizontally stacked fins. Whats the aerodynamic purpose of this?

PJ (Ireland) | @PJ_Tierney

Question for Scarbs: Is there an aerodynamic difference between using a titanium diffuser to a carbon fibre one, or is it merely a case of the carbon fibre being lighter and more heat-resistant?

Dave In Broken Arrow, Oklahoma | @DaveinOkla

will Red Bull have a working KERS for @Aussiegrit this week?

Teddy, Porter Ranch Ca

How do you see the L-shaped sidepods developing throughout the season? do you see added winglets being developed further than the one winglet the mp4-26 currently has now?

Lewis

What did you think of the Circuit of Americas progress report. Do you think F1 will be actually be racing there?

Teddy Porter Ranch Ca

It may rain in Turkey this weekend. How much of the simulator data is carried and depended on at the circuit even when the weather is not the most ideal?

Stephen Armsworth, Waterlooville, Hants | @JB_LH_fan

Me and my dad were talking about this the other day, we have studied the setup of the McLaren, RedBull and Ferrari, and seem to agree on one thing; the RedBull runs a large amount of forward rake compared to the McLaren. If McLaren were to do this would they gain an overall downforce advantage as they are essentially turning the entire floor into one large diffuser?

Anthony, Bristol, UK | @funkmastabuzzf1

To help the “slosh” effect in F1 and help safty why dont they use bladders in fuel tanks or do they?

Gabor - Hungary | @GeeHalen

There has been a lot of discussion about the 2013 regulations. I feel the 4-cyl engines too vulgar. V6 at least would be nice. The days of overpowered one-lap engines are over, that’s why 4-cylinder sound a bit clumsy.. What are your expectations of the future regulations?

Kushagra, Fort Lauderdale, FL | @kushagrap

To Craig/Peter, do you think Formula 1 should also have the legality of their cars checked before they race to avoid a situation like Sergio Perez scoring a point in his debut race and then being disqualified. But on the contrary, how would it work for the sponsors if the car is deemed in-completable and cannot race.

teddy, porter ranch ca.

An anti-clockwise circuit proves to be an advantage to some drivers and an disadvantage to others. is their some truth behind this?

Jim, IL

Does Steve have an opinion on a rule change implementing DRS/KERS/push-to-pass in NASCAR?

Gabor - Hungary | @GeeHalen

People always tell about the ‘good old days’ of F1. From the current years, what moment would you refer to in the future when explaining the ‘magic’ of F1 to someone?

Stephen Armsworth, Waterlooville, Hants | @JB_LH_fan

I am an aspiring aerodynamicist and have designed my own formula 1 car in PowerPoint, would Craig Scarborough like to have a look at it so I can find out what his opinions on it are?

teddy, porter ranch ca.

what do f1 drivers prefer, colockwise or anti clockwise?

teddy, porter ranch ca.

Will Nascar ever use more carbon fiber on their cars

Brett Foster | @BrettFoster2010

Steve, You came and did a talk at my University in 2007 and the way you talked with passion about Mclaren and the technology was brilliant! I was very surprised to hear you went to NASCAR. How much does the Technology differ between F1 and NASCAR?

Mark Beeson, California | @m242

@PeterDWindsor @ScarbsF1 With the massive loading of the tires and Pirelli degredation, shouldn’t we expect more 4-stops?

Teddy, Porter Ranch Ca

Does the front forward facing exhaust create a “seal” on the entire side of the car similar to the older lotus sliding side skirts?

Teddy, Porter Ranch Ca

Why hasn’t the Williams super low gearbox have not yet reaped the benefits showing a faster pace?

ram, bangalore , india | @rsimha

can u pls tells us the updates which will be on force india

Anthony, Bristol, UK | @funkmastabuzzf1

love the sound of that renult. is this the future if we go to the smaller turbo engines

Brett Foster | @BrettFoster2010

“Aerodynamic are for people who can’t build engines” Enzo Ferrari

Kushagra, Fort Lauderdale, FL | @kushagrap

Steve just mentioned about Speed coverage on F1 and Peter used to be the pit-lane reported for them too. In my personal opinion, I disagree with him about their coverage because of the lag they have. They are usually running a lot behind what is going on in real time. It is annoying to people who actually watch the Live Timing Screen provided by Formula1.com because that clearly tells you how far that is. Even though I am in the US, I prefer to watch the BBC coverage with JH, EJ & DC because of that. Why is that F1 on Speed is shown with a delay. Another thing which sets apart the BBC show with Speed is the access they get inside the Paddock. Shouldn’t Speed try to get that to improve their show?

Diego Merino

Please ask Steve Hallam his personal view about what went wrong in 1993 with Michael Andretti – McLaren?

Max Davies, London, UK | @maxdaviespr

@PeterDWindsor Always wondered why they don’t employ the same rules in F1. Why not check them before each race?

Chris Burchell | @chrisrburchell

Re the Murdoch posturing of CVC, seems to mee they are a dangleing a carrot to cvc to get rid of a debt they dont want.

SakDimF1 | @SakDimF1

Do you think (as I do) that Mercedes will make a huge step forward in the next 3 races? Greetings from Greece!

JC - Mexico | @jcsienra

To all, do you know what are the upgrades that the main teams are bringing to Turkey? Red Bull, McLaren, and specially Ferrari? is it true the use of Toyota’s wind tunnel by Ferrari?

Salim

Why does Formula 1 feel the need to constantly change the rules?
There is no need to change the engine regulations or anything else for that matter. It’s perfect the way it is now, please just leave it.
Things like the budget cap, I don’t believe there is a single fan who cares how much a team spends. For the teams that don’t have the budgets of the top teams then tough, maybe they should start a different championship. Personally I would be much happier if the top teams could have four cars each. Just imagine Hamilton,Button,Kubica and Kobayashi in the same team.

Alejandro from Madrid | @Khan_F1

@Craig Scarborough: How does rake affect both centre of gravity and pressure in a F1 car? Is that the main reason of Red Bull’s RB7 performance? Could it be easily copied by other teams?

Thanks in advance, and great show yours, Peter.

Dave In Broken Arrow, Oklahoma | @DaveinOkla

How do you think the tire degradation is going to be around turn 8? I think there will be so much clagg around that corner going wide may be unrecoverable like most did before by going wide.

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Turkey’s Turn 8 famously takes up, according to Mercedes, “40% of the tyre energy” for the lap. Do you think with the Pirelli tyre wear this year, teams will go as far as maybe even some positive camber on the front left in order to ease some of the tyre wear? I believe Nascar do that on ovals

mrbigstuff, Poland | @f1talks

Did you hear that new Mercedes upgrade package should gave them one second? How the hell it’s possible? Any ideas?

F1 Talks, Poland | @f1talks
