Monaco GP Debrief

We had our sixth winner from six races at Monaco last weekend - and Craig Scarborough, our technical expert, will be joining us in the studio to discuss how and why Mark Webber was able to win his second race for Red Bull Racing at the Principality.  We'll be talking about the controversial "holes" in the floor of the RBR7, together with other technical developments seen at Ferrari and Force India.  And joining us live on-line will be the Third Driver for Mercedes Grand Prix - Sam Bird.  Not only did Sam score a brilliant win in Sunday's World Series by Renault 3.5 race at Monaco: he was also there, in the Mercedes pit, when Michael Schumacher took the pole.  Conor Daly, recovering nicely from his horrific accident in the Monaco GP3 race, will also be talking to us live about his weekend - and about his recent straight-line test with Force India.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Fake Charlie Whiting | @charlie_whiting

Scarbs, I’ll be wandering around the garages next week in Montreal. Any specific things you’d like pictures of through a long lens?

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Hey Guys. Can the Merc double DRS system be used, by using a front air intake on the nose instead of piping it from the rear. Then have a system of spliting the air using some kind of G-force/pressure switch, to divert the air to different channels to feed each side of the front wing independently for cornering even maybe?

Steven Kewley

Last year Mclaren had a very fast car in race trim which allowed Jenson to fight through the field after a bad Qualifying, this season he can’t do that, how is he going to beat Lewis and challenge for the World Championship?

Pedro Gaspar, Javea in Spain | @kibuaka

Hi Peter,

First of all, congratulations on the show, it’s a pleasure for a change to have an honest and factual F1 show with a no-nonsense approach and politics free.
I would like also to congratulate Mark Webber on his win in the Monaco GP, he thoroughly deserved it after a couple of disappointing years.
My question is related to McLaren, what exactly is happening at McLaren in the last 2/3 races, particularly at the Monaco GP, is it just the case of lack of performance, bad strategy calls, poor team management or do you think they have been caught out by the other teams latest car developments, surely it cannot be only related to tyre management and how much performance the team was able to extract from them during the race. Thank you.

Nipam - India | @nipcarlover

Who do you guys tip for the win in Montreal?
I am going for Michael.. Given his record there and the strengths of the Merc given that he doesn’t face bad lucj again..

Nick | @N15ck

What do you think of the new tyres? Do you think they wreck racing by having to constantly ‘look after your tyres’?

Jacek, Poland

I believe Kovalainen might have made couple of bln dollars with his 13th position last weekend. That took caterham to 12position in constructors championship ahead of HRT and Marussia and with more ‘predictable’ races ahead, it is unlikely any of the lesser teams can top that. Do You think Heiki did a great job last weekend?

JP Calgary, Canada

Craig, what is the main function of the hole sometimes seen in front of the nose conec? I’ve heard something about driver cooling or even suspension fluids cooling… How do engineers cope with the aerodynamic effect of it?

SomersF1 - Isle of Wight | @SomersF1

Hi Guys

Having seen the Conor Daly incident I wonder why Seranovich wasn’t orange/black flagged when his rear wing was removed as he was obviously at odds aero wise
Cheers guys, great show as usual!

Jack, Dublin

@Scarbs/Peter Do you think there will be a push toward a higher horsepower limit for the 2014 regulations?

Paul in Buckinghamshire | @rackham963

It could be argued that Vettel and Button coped best last year with the new tyres. This year they both seem to be struggling a bit, while their teammates have both bounced back from “poor” years. Coincidence? Or subtle tyre design issues?

emission0

Aero question for scarbs:
Looking at golf ball technology last week. The dimples on the golf ball significatly reduce drag whilst the ball is flying through the air. Would this apply to the bodywork on an F1 car?

Sean in California

Peter and Scarbs
Didnt Vettel use 1 set of supersofts in Q1 and 2 supersofts in Q2. Essentially being out of tires for Q3.

carbonfiber diet Atlanta,GA

Any thoughts on Nico Rosberg being around in the hunt come mid season?

Kate UK | @Kateafan

Hi Peter,as someone who recently finds themselves interested in racing fuel cells, can Scarbs give me a beginners guide? Thanks, Kate.

Dan, Buckinghamshire

Hi guys, great show, I’ve 2 questions for you
1) Which driver do you think will be the first to win his second race this season?
2) When do you think Michael Schumacher’s luck will improve enough for him to have a “clean” race weekend?

Lisa and Gary USA

Hi Peter and Scarbs, we loved to see Mark win @ Monaco! Mark do you feel you can win the F1 title this year, and if not, do you think in following years it will be possible! Lisa and Gary

Jacek, Poland

Q to Connor: What is the reasonable age to start competing in F1? And at what age a driver is simply too old to start racing in F1?

Mihail

Question to Sam Bird: How do you compare GP2 and FR3.5? Which car is better preparation for F1, which one is harder to setup and what is the difference between the tires?

Ralph, California

How in the heck did Rubens right-foot brake?!

ram bangalore india

y are force india so slow this season ?

Elan , Oregon, USA

Why is Lotus not able to up their strategy for Kimi?

DavidS, London | @pionir

Should Schuie be punished for the crash at the start? As the car behind should he have lifted as he should have known from his immense experience that the cars ahead would be going two or three abreast (as can even be seen from the onboard) and he would inevitably be squeezed into the wall.

Alexey Grin from Belarus

Scarbs, could you describe holes on the rear bodywork of F2012 (around coke bottle and exhausts area)?

diane cullimore

Hi guys i think mark will go to Ferrari just got this feeling and he will fit in there really well. Not on Twitter now given it up but not the flying lap xxx

Sam Adelaide

Why does Ricciardo lack race pace compared to Vergne?

ram bangalore india | @rsimha

great gob peter n hello to scarbs too he is a brilliant guy hi from bangalore india . v never this show if v can watch it live . v go to youtube n watch it

Alex Toronto Canada | @F1KubicaFan

Hi Peter, love your show and watch it religiously.I would like to ask you on behalf of all Robert Kubica’s fans to say a few words of encouragement about his comeback to formula one, as there is no question if, but when he will be back on the grid. Thank you!

John in Twickenham | @Adorimedia

Have Red Bull turned the corner after their Monaco win or was it just Monaco being Monaco i.e who gets pole win and there race pace is still off?

Rainer Vienna

will there also be a one pit race in Canada, as the super softs held so long in Monaco?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

RE: Canada, does anyone have any concerns about the student protests there truly disrupting the GP Weekend? Scarbs, any chance you might make it across the pond for this one?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

RE: Monaco, can anything be done to enhance the on-track action on such a tight circuit? (other than rain?)

Nick in NY | @ncafoo

Vettel was looking strangely lackluster next to Mark in Monaco. Would you put that down to tires, set up, new components on the car or just plainly the driver?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

RE: Webber to Ferrari in 2013. Your thoughts? Joe Saward feels this may already be a done deal as he said on his blog

DJ Finland

Can you go to details about Renault F1 steering? Seems Räikkönen likes different feeling and what are ways to do this in F1 car.

Rainer Vienna

it seems that the Mercedes was, at least in Monaco, the fastest car. Is the lighter gearbox the reason for this?

Konstantinos - Athens/Greece | @PhaethonF1

Peter, we’ve seen a few “near miss” cases at Monaco last weekend, particularly in GP2 and GP3. Do you think F1 should review some things on safety, e.g. the height and the material of the walls around the circuits etc?

Jacek, Poland

How would 80s-90s F1 driver feel in todays F1 car? Is it a totally different sport now than in Senna/Prost/Mansell/ era?

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Peter,
I’m very happy about the news of the new f1 movie “Rush”, from director Ron Howard. It’s maybe the first popper f1 movie since the Grand Prix. How much does this movie means in the sense of bringing formula 1 to the American audience? Thanks!

John in Nelson Bay | @Adorimedia

Is Williams return to form this year because they are traditionally a team that produces a better ‘mechanically gripped’ car than one that relies more on aero i.e ban on EBD?

BradC.Toronto | @greaseandgears

What is the difference between Bridgestone, Pirelli & Michelin in terms of research? Did the grooved Michelin’s give off more downforce? Or help with airflow?

Jacek, Poland

I was watching Monaco GP last weekend and naturally I could not follow all the action happening during the race but I can not remember a single overtake. I would like to know if there was any overtaking in that grand prix and if we can ever witness overtaking there in the future (not in wet)?

Paul Dunk (London) | @paul_dunk

How do you believe the development race is shaping up at the moment? It’s so hard to tell who’s doing the best job development wise against teams just getting on top of the tyres.

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

RE: RBR floor holes, do either of you expect any further action from the FIA other than “a clarification” on article 3.12.5 and what do you expect rivals to do in reaction?

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

If you would be on the board of Williams, who would you chose solely based on their driving performance(not the money they bring), Maldonado or Senna?

Jacek, Poland

Q to Scarbs: how can anyone notice anything under the car, especially tiny holes? I understand technical officials can do that but how did You manage to notice that?

Nipam - Ahmedabad, India | @nipcarlover

Hey Peter and Scarbs, love the show, been watching this live for the first time, and would love some insight on the updates of the Mercdees AMG that have made such a big difference to their speed and race pace.. :)

Nick | @whitnos

Hi everyone,
In your opinion, who would have won the race if Schumi had not received his grid penalty?
Thanks

Joe Hadar, Humboldt Iowa

Can Scarbs explain the FIA ruling that a hole in the RB floorboard is still ‘impervious’? And well done Mark Webber glad to see he went for the win.

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

RE: Montreal And Pirelli – how do you expect the degredation of the new Pirelli compounds to hold out on the relatively green street circuit of Circuit Gilles Villenueve?

Kate UK | @Kateafan

Like everyone watching Conor’s GP3 race I was relieved to see him get out of the car ok but do you think the catch fencing would have held a faster F1 car as well? Better luck to him in Valencia.

Show notes still have to be added.

Williams4Ever | @Williams4Ever

On the note of Renault’s (Lotus) steering rack, I feel the more resources they spend on fixing that issue, they will lose in the overall development race. Maybe its time to cut losses and Kimi adjust to the steering for this season.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Thew golf ball thing only works if its spinning

danny @Martigny (Switzerland)

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Congrats to Dario too for a great win and tribute to Dan.

Matt USA

Congratulations Mark

Matt USA

Mark you have the Talent.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

I know Monaco is always hard to overtake, but the fact that they were all so close and the rain came 15 mins late. Thats why I found it frustrating it could of been one of the all time classics if only it started 15 mins later.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Love the Scarbs shows…..well love them all but Scarbs is the man.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Hey all.So glad to see Mark get a win,and Nico up there again in what I thought was a frustrating race.
