Santander German GP preview with the Caterham F1 Team

Nothing stays still in F1, particularly when a young team is finding its character and building its future .  And so it is with Caterham F1.  Hopes are high for Hockenheim as the team puts in more mileage with promising new aero updates on the CT01.  Back in the UK, meanwhile, Caterham are now in the process of switching base from Hingham, Norfolk, to the Leafield Technical Centre in Oxfordshire.   We'll be talking about all this and more with Caterham F1's Heikki Kovalainen as he joins us live from Germany in preparation for the season's third double-header race sequence.   It was in 2008 that Heikki finished fifth in Germany and then won in Hungary for Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes.  His challenges this year are different but in many ways every bit as enthralling.  Travel schedules permitting - Caterham's aero test this week was moved at the last minute from Kemble in the UK to France due to weather conditions - we also hope to spend some time with John Iley, the former Jordan/Renault/Ferrari/McLaren aerodynamicist who joined Caterham F1 early this year as Performance Director.

Zandvort does it still get very sandy

Matt USA

Peter how do you see the mid field at this stage in the season?

Gregg from Cape Cod | @31gph

Peter -

If Mark Webber won back-to-back at the German GP and McLaren has another poor race, do you think that we could see an increased possibility of Vettle to Ferrari and Lewis to Red Bull in 2013?

Melissa J--Chicago | @MelissaJMassey

Hi Peter,
Will we ever have two German races again? Which track (Nurburgring or Hockenhiem) is your favorite for the German race? Thanks

Matt USA

Daniel how do you find to jump from one Championship to another and from one type of to another ?

Amit Mandalia in London | @amit_mandalia

Question for Heikki, with the progress the team has made in its short live, how confident is he that he will soon be able to fight for points with Caterham, and does he see the possibility of a future at another team?

John in Indiana

This past week we have a second incidence of possible drug use in NASCAR. The driver’s representatives say it was a “stimulant”. I am ADHD and I take a stimulant as treatment for my ADHD. Would this automatically disqualify me for ever being a licensed driver?

Gregg from Cape Cod | @31gph

Heikki – How do you think you would do back at McLaren vs. Button?

SocOps USA | @SocOps

S=Do you think the F1 drivers can still feel the tyres wit their bum?

Amit Mandalia in London | @amit_mandalia

Hi Peter, what is your assessment of Caterham and their progress? Do you think their current rate of progress means they can reach the midfield & keep the likes of Heikki?

Jacek/Poland

About F1 engine development. Is this also an area of intense performance improvement? Or are all the engines very close and there is little space for improvement and as a result F1 teams are looking at other areas (aero, tyre management, strategy) to shave off lap times.

Rasmus from Estonia | @rasmustali

Hi,

If ferrari will have same situation in Hockenheim like in 2010 would they make Massa give away his position again?

Amit Mandalia in London | @amit_mandalia

Hi Peter,

Question for John Iley (when he arrives). With the weather at Silverstone which meant Caterham were unable to get any meaningful running on all the updates, does he think there is a chance that Hockenheim will lead to both cars being able to fight the Toro Rossos and with the rate of progress the team is making, how close does he think Caterham can get to the likes of Force India, Sauber, Williams etc before the end of the season?

SocOps USA | @SocOps

Where ,if you could drive for anyone, F1 or other, would you drive for

Gabriella in Norfolk

Heikki, how is it do you keep motivated despite not really being competitive for even points, let alone victories?

Chris White in Middlesbrough | @cwhite90999

How close does Heikki think Caterham are to scoring their first point(s)?

Jacek/Poland

For Heikki: what challenges do You face in Caterham compared to those in Mclaren?

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondumbara

Hiya John.

Given the wealth of experience you’ve had in different teams, could you just explain some of the differences between the “cultures” of each team? For example I’ve heard McLaren is incredibly data- and academically-driven, and very “cerebral” in its approach, while Ferrari have an admittedly more “gut feel” approach, etc etc.

Also, How much of the aerodynamics work is designed in consideration of the driver’s driving styles? ie do you specifically engineer certain parts of the aerodynamics setup and aerodynamics of the car to tailor certain driving styles?

Jacek/Poland

Double header: do You think there can be 3 races in a row in the future? F1 calander is getting tighter each year and I can imagine more than 20 races in a year (F1 is about profit). But where is the limit?

Pedro

Peter, how did you assess the mclaren drivers performance so far this year, especially Jenson, and finally do you think Lewis will remain at mclaren?

Melissa J--Chicago | @MelissaJMassey

Hello Heikki! It seems that F1 is quite popular in Finland since there have been several Finish drivers over the years. What makes Finland different from its Nordic neighbors, that don’t seem to have as much interesting in racing? Do you and Kimi Raikkonen get along? Best of Luck!

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondumbara

To Heikki,

I’m asking a bit of a difficult question here, so please forgive me.

I remember in 2007 you said something like you didn’t want to be Alonso’s teammate at Renault in 2008 because you didn’t want to be a number 2 driver. Let’s say for some reason it was not possible to stay at Caterham for you (touch wood). The only offer was an offer at Ferrari to partner Fernando. Would you take it? Do you think you can beat him in the same car?

Also, if you were to repeat 2007, 2008 and 2009, as the driver you are now, would you perform better?

Rasmus from Estonia | @rasmustali

Hi,

Heikki have you enjoyed your F1 career more on Caterham or in Mclaren?

Gabriella in Norfolk

Peter, how would you describe Heikki’s driving style?

And after that, Heikki, would you agree?

Graham Keilloh in London | @TalkingaboutF1

Does the length of time that it is taking for Caterham to consistently run at the pace of the midfeild teams merely reflect that forming a F1 team from scratch is difficult, or do you feel that there are more specific reasons for this, e.g. things Caterham could have done better, or decisions that on reflection could have made differently?

Pedro, Spain

Peter, how do you assess the mclaren drivers performance so far this year, especially Jenson, and finally do you think Lewis will remain at mclaren?

Michael Doha, Qatar | @microwave1965

Good evening Peter,

There was another FOTA forum today in Germany. Is there any progress on these being covered for all the fans of F1?

Thanks,

Michael

If You could take for example Mclaren F1 from the end of 2012 season spec, and then take it back to Australian GP-how much quicker would it be than the car which originally drove in Ozz.

FranTony, USA

Hi Peter!
Great, Great Show, I’ve watch a few episodes more than once. That’s how much I enjoy your show. Congratulations.

QUESTION: Due to the LACK OF AMERICAN DRIVERS OR TEAMS in the paddock, what do you think (from the marketing perspective) would launch F1 in the USA with a BANG. I suggest to have a Female driver (you know who) on a mid-field team like “Sauber” perhaps. If her actual contracts where not an issue, I’m sure sponsors would fight to support her. All eyes in the USA will be on F1.

Your thoughts.

I am so pleased that you mentioned Bruno Senna has been awarded the Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini Trophy for his commitment and dedication towards autosport. I think it was appropriate after Nico Rosberg last year.

Danny

Thank you for the show.

FranTony, USA

I don’t see Heikki K. as 2nd driver. He has what it takes to be No. 1. His time in Caterham has proved so, from the development and consistency point of view.

Bas CB Czech Republic | @logist_BCB

I love to hear these drivers talk about what they do on track, so much better than team orchestrated interviews. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to hear from them.

Matt USA

Good Luck Heikki to your next Grand Prix’s.
