50
Welcome to 2012Our first Episode of 2012 provides an opportunity to look at the Formula One season ahead - at the way the teams are adapting to the new technical regulations, at the new driver line-ups and at changes to the Sporting Rules. We'll endeavour to answer all your questions and more - and we will be doing so with the invaluable input of Craig Scarborough, one of F1's leading technical analysts. No stranger to The Flying Lap, Craig's highly-acclaimed website, http://ScarbsF1.wordpress.com, has become a focal point for both F1 team people and fans alike. Episode 50, just short of our first anniversary, also marks another first for The Flying Lap: we will be airing live, on-location, from South America. |

this episode?
Peter, I thought you made a very interesting point about sponsorship money in response to the question posed in this episode. Could you elaborate in a future episode? Do you feel like that is poorly structured system from F1’s stand point (to have the drivers be the face so much more than the teams that we now find they’re the major source of sponsor money) or is it healthy for the sport? I thought it a very interesting topic.
hey scarbs/peter pirelli once spoke about larger wheels, since those comments nothing has been said is that still in the pipeline??
will we see you back in SPEED? you were awesome on the pre-show and on-track.
Skype is very badly coded, it’ll make any laptop go hot when you video call, unfortunately. The only thing you can do is to angle the computer so the fan exhausts arn’t blocked.
Cool blown laptops??? Whatever next? ;)
Thanks for a great show guys.
Hi Brett, that was a role that IndyCar, F2 and F5000 fulfilled but now F1 is the only open-ish single seater formula, the others all being a spec’ series funded almost entirely by pay drivers or backed drivers with little to no technical innovation. A sad situation really. Endurance racing gets excellent crowds at the circuit (in the UK and US anyway), the lack of TV audience and public perception is due to poor and incorrectly conceived marketing.
@paul, as much as I love the GT1 and LeMans, I was talking about more of a single seater series. I don’t think Endurance gets as many viewers and the high level single seaters and money raised from viewers/fans etc will fund the tech. just a thought.
Thanks Peter and Scarbs. Most appreciated.
Well done TFL!!! Scarbs is one of my favorite guests.THANKS!!!
@Danny – LMP1, always has been because they embrace different concepts and don’t ban innovations! This will become the case even more when LMP1 moves to an energy consumption formula in 2014.
Nice to be back on track. Happy racing new year to everybody.
In 2012 the car presentation I’m waiting the most is the new Toyota LMP1 hybrid and then only the new 2012 F-1. What would be the most technical formulae in 2014 : F-1 or LMP ?
Thanks for taking my question today on the show. Great show again, way to kick off 2012
I am indeed at Cranfield University. :-) Home to where all the UK based F1 team crash testing is done.
No good sponsors, no money to build a great car. No great car, no good sponsors.
Evil circle, where Williams is stuck right in the middle and cant get out.
I agree Alex but Id have to say williams didnt do much for BAR either lol
It’s the teams own fault that they haven’t been able to follow the ‘pace’ of the other more successful teams. With this I mean it’s extremely conservative to employ drivers which should have quit F1 years ago.
I don’t think Williams benefitted much from BAR in 2011.
@Brett Foster
“do you think there is a gap in the market for another high level race series that can match the technical level of F1??”
There is, it’s called the World Endurance Championship, including Le Mans.
I think DLR and BAR still have something to offer their respective teams…..not sure I can say that about the other guys u mention
Forgot about him…
The list is far too long.
Alex what about MSC???lol
F1 has way too many old drivers on the grid at the moment. Kick the old guys out and get some fresh blood in. By that I mean MAS, BAR, HEI, DLR, TRU and maybe even WEB.
I was a mechanic at a car dealership & the last thing I wanted to do when I got home was work on my car.
Rubens ‘farewell tour’ in 2012 is a fantastic idea. Having done that, he’ll probably want to race in 2013 as well!
Everyone loves Rubens and I for one will love to see him do what you said Peter
Id like to thank TFL for my Globe trainers I won for question of the week. They came awhile back but I missed the last show, so THANKYOU!!!
Yaaaaaaaay!
Hey guys…..Happy New Year
Great to have The Flying Lap back!
