Canadian GP Preview with Rob Wilson

By popular demand, Rob Wilson, the world's pre-eminent driver coach, joins us in the studio this week.  The brief:  to discuss the driving styles of all the leading contenders as we head towards the Canadian GP.  There'll be plenty of insight and lots of talk about what being a great racing driver is all about.  WilliamsF1's strategy engineer, Mark Barnett, will also be directing us to Montreal from his perspective.  And, as part of our study of driving talent and how it can be honed, we'll be hearing live on line from two, young talented drivers of the future who shone in two important categories last weekend - Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, who continued his domination of the AutoGP series with two stunning wins in Portugal; and from William Buller, who scored a win and and a P2 in the Euro F3 races in Austria.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

mr. Rob, if you can, tell us you’re opinion on the Bruno’s driving? Thanks

Rasmus from Estonia | @rasmustali

Hi,

Rob do your students usually have more problems with their footwork or steering input.

Fake Charlie Whiting | @charlie_whiting

Are there any drivers who have habits or driving issues you would want to correct if you had the chance to work with them? What areas of improvement do you see, and what separates an Alonso from the back of the class?

Rasmus from Estonia | @rasmustali

Hi,

Rob do you use any onboard footage to show your students example of what to do with a racing car and also what not to do.

Kushagra, Los Angeles | @kushagrap

Hey Rob and Peter. Always a pleasure to listen to Rob and my question is to him.
You are a big supporter of Kimi’s driving style. I am curious to know how did that affect Kimi during FP1 with a steering wheel that didn’t suit him. How much would he have lost in laptime if he did do that session without changing and what would the characteristics of it be.
Thanks!

Diego Merino Madrid SPAIN | @DmerinoF1

Pls ask Rob Wilson What would Gilles Villeneuve have said about DRS???

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

MONTREAL weather forecasts a wet Friday and Saturday and a dry Sunday. What specific challenges does this present to engineers trying to find an ideal setup?

Gabor - Bristol | @Twitter

What differentiates an F1 driver from other drivers of single seater series (and basically any other racing series) as far as mindset is concerned?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

Which team do you believe currently has the best potential for winning in Montreal?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

Good day gentlemen, Question one RE: Montreal, If Ferrari don’t do well on this circuit considering they have struggled with top end speed and grip, do you believe they will effectively be unable to mount a real challenge for the rest of the championship?

Pani from Woking | @Pani_Tsouris

Canada has been notorious over the years for high tyre degradation. With the tyres playing such a big role this year. Do you think Canada will show a more scattered and varied strategy throughout the pit lane compared to any other race we have seen so far?
Pani from Woking

Dave in Broken Arrow, oklahoma | @DaveinOkla

Will only a single DRS zone in Canada this year, does that mean there is no chance of a worst to first drive like button did last year?

Dky624 Illinois,US

Is if possible for Red Bull to use their cooling slot as an fduct which would pass air over their diffuser, rather than optimize straight line speed.

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

What specific challenges does Montreal offer drivers in terms of balance. Drivers will have to guard against brake temps and tyre degredation – who is your pick for best to handle this challenge?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

How do you believe the relatively green tarmac in Montreal will effect the Pirelli Soft and Super Soft compounds..ie. marbles and degredation and grip or lack thereof?

Nick UK

Do you believe that McLarens advantage of the last few years at this track will shine through? and do you think Mercedes DDRS will play a big factor in qualifying?

Korrie London | @korriestanley

Hi what are the main differences between a manipulative driving style and a reactive one and which is better.

Ciaran McMullan, Northern Ireland

How can Flippe Massa use his performance in Monaco to gain confidence giving that Montreal is such a different circuit

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

mr. Rob, my dad is a bus driver his whole life, when i told him how Kimi goes to the extreme details concerning his steering options and misses practice session, he told me (translation without colorful word) “A driver shouldn’t spent much time changing a car to suite him, he should adapt to any car if he is THE DRIVER”. Do you think there is any truth to that? They should be the best drivers in the world, and they should have a power to adapt to the car that they are given to, not doing changes that’s gonna compromise their track time? Thanks! (after that my dad said “i could do a better job with one eye and one hand, demit!”

Bob Keating USA | @gpflagger

For Mr Wilson;
Which Driver’s personal style suits, 1. Montreal 2. Pirelli Tires for Montreal?
Cooler temps. are predicted this weekend.

Mark: St. Louis, Missouri, USA

What kind of driving style is demanded at Canada? Silky smooth like Button or furious with extreme slip angles like Alonso?

Does it even matter any more with teams wanting drivers to back off and put in targeted lap times for strategy?

Show notes still have to be added.

Is it possible to have winner number 8 not only in the next race but even untill the rest of the season? Who else is capable of winning GP?

Jacek, Poland

which team had the quickest car in Canada? Was it Redbull or Mclaren or perhaps Lotus? How much of the result/position should be credited to the driver’s performance in Canada?

Jacek, Poland

Do certain teams historically prefer certain race strategies? I think Sauber specialize in one-stop strategies whereas Ferrari hardly ever try that. Do You think that teams perfect their strategies over years and therefore some would be more comfortable than others to try one stop, two stop or three stop strategy?

gamer9 from california

how do you think williams are going to deal with bruno senna being constantly more than one second off the real pace of the car

kenneth for malta

we saw the last 7 races 7 winners, teams are getting closer to each other but it is because they are good all the drivers or the cars are making a differance? i heard that they are thinking to reduce more the money more in f1,this will mean that they want to do a buget cap ? because is funny some years ago all where against it.

Srinjay/India

How would Rob compare Jim Clark as a racing driver compared to Ayrton Senna?

danny @Martigny (Switerland)

Does F-1 still have the worlds greatest drivers ?

I guess not because Alonso, Schumacher or Vettel are “only” F-1 champion. They cannot compare to Mario Andretti or Graham Hill who had won almost everything.

mad79

why is the sound so poor?I have all my setings to maximum and I bearly hear you!

How do we think MGP will go this weekend?

Question for Rob: ‘The Zone’
Hi Rob
Do you think that drivers that are capable of placing themselves into ‘the zone’ where the connection between man, machine and track all become a seamless transition where the envelope of all three can be pushed to the limit.
I have experienced something whilst karting where time seemed to slow down, speed seemed to become diminished and my perception of lap times became very slow whilst on track. However during these sessions, I found that lap times were significantly reduced.
Do you train drivers to get into this place?
