Qantas Australian GP preview

As the new F1 season bursts into life in Melbourne, we preview the race - and the season ahead - with a detailed look at the teams, cars and variables that may come into play.  The very talented Craig Scarborough has in previous episodes  talked us through the new cars and the developments we have seen during testing - but what will be the final, race specifications we'll see in Melbourne?  Can Red Bull Racing begin where they left off in 2011?  Or have the new regulations opened the door to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari or perhaps to LotusF1 or Mercedes AMG Petronas?  In addition, and in the first of regular updates we'll have throughout the year, WilliamsF1 Strategy Engineer, Mark Barnett, will be guiding us through the key, specific, elements of F1 racing on the Melbourne circuit.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Steven Kewley , Nantwich

Speaking of wet races, will Mclaren be super strong with their lose nose?

Darrell from phoenix az

This week we heard from Charlie Whiting about new rules. The term thrown around lately is the “spirit of the rule” How much do teams really try to keep to the spirit of rules? or do they just like having that “out” when other teams come up with something new? lol

Chris Cassingham Dallas Tx

with HRT and Marussia having missed preseason tests for the past few years, and little hope of them getting past Caterham in the standings for 10th and that valuable money, what do you see for their future in F1? Do you see them as a benefit to the sport when all they seem to be able to hope for is being lapped as little as possible?

Mr. Pigz in HK

Another great show guys.
Scarbs, sorry if I might have missed this, but were there any issues with flexi-wings during testing?

Boris Deshev, Estonia

Great show guys, thank you so much!
Why are the teams not running two cars on the tests? Is it a regulation?

Thanks for the answer, at India last year we had two zones two detections points, so technically it should be possible

Marc Rennen Germany

Hello there,

I am also an endurance racing fan,the Le Mans prototypes are built with different ideas and by different brands like F1,but ACO did a better job on balancing the performance compared to FIA,my question is,why is it so hard for F1 to balance the performance?

Kera Rotterdam

Enjoing the show! Thank you.
And to all of us – lets have a great season!

Rodolpho Belgium

Great show as usual !! There’s a lot of un experimented or didn’t made a star from along time What about a strike at the first start ??

Rob Hartz Ohx | @rob_hartz

Question regarding the Merc F/W/DRS system…is the system useful when not within 1 sec during the race? I know can be used in Quali and practice.

Pani from Woking | @Pani_Tsouris

Have the rules for Q3 changed this years? Last year we had far too many drivers not setting a time to save tyres for the race. Do you know if this has now changed?

Matt USA

Scarbs with all the different design features on the cars, how much of an edge do the parts give each team in testing and potentially the races ?

Rishi Raj Singh from India

Hi Guys, great job with the show and especially Scarbs with the blog as well. A question for both of you, do you think the ban to off throttle blowing, will help Michael Schumacher be more competitive, i.e. can he use his natural driving style more now compared to last year?

I would be interested in both Peter’s and Craig’s view, but my opinion is that each DRS Zone should have it’s own Detection point. Views?

Jassi

Evening guys! aren’t the HRT and Marussia cars more or less the same as last year except with a slightly different front end (nose especially)? why then have they struggled to get the car ready(in terms of the design aspect)? Cost is obviously an issue but surely it’s not that expensive to use last years car.

ANdrew, Glasgow | @ESPImperium

A whacky idea i had, Could teams run a small 1 or two inch pipe from the side pods thrugh and past the engine to heat the air up, then outward to the 2011 exhaust system to seal the diffuser almost like a blown diffuser, however it wouldnt have the ability of having ther exhaust blowning whilst off throttle. Almost like a cold blown exhaust?

DO you think the ban of wind tunnel testing would be a new way to even out the feild and keep costs down for a few seasons.

Geoffrey fleming london

mad79-romania

I think I found a solution to the problem at testing during season.
If a team would like to test during a season they should deposit a sum of money calculated this way:total cost of a testing day(including rental of a track, people, food and other expences)lets say 1 milion euro per day x 14 testing(maximum testing days) days equals 14 million extra for a team.
I would imagine, that RBR,Mclaren,Ferrari,Lotus ,Mercedes and maybe STR would jump to test in the year so we have 14 million x 6 teams, that’s 84 million euro. That sum of money would be divided between the teams that cannot afford to test in a year!
What do you think?

Ernie | @goggs_on_f1

As you said, this is a secondary function, but is it not still considered a moving part which affects aerodynamics?

Ernie | @goggs_on_f1

Is the Mercedes exhaust flow solution the best you’ve seen thus far of the new challengers? Are we set for any possible appeals in this area?

Simon Puiy | @simonpuiy

Scarbs, Fantastic work. What software do you use to do your drawings? Do you have access to CFD at home?

H2H

Thanks to both of you for the great show and congratulations to Craig on that Autosport articles.

That Mercedes solution is incredible. I gave the RB8 exhaust solution a very close look and it seems to combine the best of both worlds of managing the exhaust flow alongside the ramp and the airflow around the sidepods through that tunnel

Do you agree with this rough statement? How does it compare to other solutions?

Thanks
H2H

Dimitris | @Darkest_Star4

Since the Barcelona test and the controversy involving Ferrari’s ban on drivers’ communications, Alonso made comments at a football match and the other day opened a twitter account which judging from the team’s official PR was not very welcome. Are the clouds beginning to thicken over this much celebrated relationship? Do you see Fernando at RBR…?

Ernie | @goggs_on_f1

Do you believe the Mercedes downwash exhaust path will be the most effective?

May be the main problem of the F2012 “only” a very narrow operative window ?

When is Scarbs going to get snapped up by one of the teams? I imagine they’ll come knocking for one reason or another.

Jesus from Spain

Now that Ferrari have changed the exhaust position, why do they keep the Acer ducts? Cooling maybe?

sam Wisconsin, USA | @sammyrocker5150

Hello Peter and Scarbs. With the Mercedes front wing W duct being activated by DRS, would that be considered “Movable Aerodynamics” by the FIA?

Robin Jones Pwllheli | @robinrhysjones

Nothing better than the Flying Lap to quench my F1 thirst!! Who do you think will be the biggest surprise of 2012?

Geoff from Basildon essex | @r1gwh

Have any of the teams got new motor homes or media centres this year.

Jack Leslie, UK | @JackLeslieF1

Guys, with HRT and Marussia revealing their cars so late how far behind the midfield do you think/predict they will be?

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Scarbs, Newey’s steering wheel is haunting me so I’ve gone looking for more info. I’ve fount in video archives from season 98 that one of mcl mechanics said that they try to make their steering wheels as light as they can, so that steering is precise. Looking at mcl s.w. from 98 you can se that it’s almost bare. you can se the wiring from behind, it looks minimalist. So, maybe that can be the answer to why Adrian designs steering wheels like that, for precise cornering? what you’re take on that? Thanks

Ernie | @goggs_on_f1

Pani from Woking | @Pani_Tsouris

Correct me If I am wrong but wasnt the McLaren original F-duct concept outlawed (banned after a season) for cost cutting reasons? So why does this not apply to Mercedes AMG?

Ernie | @goggs_on_f1

At this point with crash tests done, is it possible for other teams to attempt to copy this F-Duct approach? Similar to the way teams were unable to copy McLaren’s f-Duct previously?

Petra

Hi Peter, Hi Craig… do you have an idea, about the postbox in the RB8? It’s probably not really used to cool Marks feed.

Robin Jones Pwllheli | @robinrhysjones

Nothing better than the Flying Lap to quench my F1 thirst!! Who do you think will be the biggest surprise of 2012?

Nick, in Kent | @whitnos

Hi,
I’ve got a question for Mark:
I know many teams use complicated computer simulations to help make their strategy decisions, but I was wondering whether there are ever occasions where quicker non-computerised methods are used during a race.

I’m only asking as I recently developed a tyre wear model as part of a school project, which attempted to help make instant strategy decisions (such as what tyres to change to if you suddenly need to pit for a new wing) without ever requiring any computation. Do any teams use anything like this?

Thanks – Love the show! Keep it up!

Staffan, Finland | @skalet66

How big an advantage to you estimate the Mercedes F-duct front wing to be compared to the “standard” solution?

Gary Marshall | @marshallgp

Given the fact that the RRA has hit a brick wall with Ferrari and Red Bull leaving FOTA, do you think a Bernie enforced budget cap will do the job any better?

Fake Ross Brawn | @fake_rossbrawn

Peter, Craig – Please cease this madness at once, or I will be forced to set the interns on you.

Russ from Arizona | @Parnelli98

A somewhat simple question for you both: can the FIA ban ECU induced (or on purpose) misfires? I’ve been reading the interesting theory of misfires are “going around” the ban on off throttle exhaust blowing.

Armin sweden

@Craig: I havent read that Charlie W. has passed RB exhaust design. My question is then what would the reason be to stop RB exhaust design and not McLaren? They use the same principles.

Darrell from phoenix az

With talk in the recent weeks of teams performance. Does “sandbagging” really exist? And if so, whose the likely culprit?

Alex from Rochester, NY

Will the Mercedes F-Duct front wing enable them to use DRS in locations in which they were previously unable to do so, such as some high-speed corners?

Lauri from Estonia

Which are the parts that are easy to develope in CFD and wind tunnel with little on track testing? I think it was Jenson who said that now without blown diffuser it is so much easier to test things in wind tunnel. So development during the year should be easier this year?

Gary Marshall | @marshallgp

Good evening Peter and Craig, do you see any chance for Marussia this year, given their late unveiling and the fact they are the only team not to be running KERS this year?

Steven Kewley , Nantwich

Will Mclaren have a bigger advantage in wet races because of their low nose design?

Frenkoz from Italy | @www.twitter.com/Frenkoz

Hi Scarbs from an Italian McLaren supporter! Why McLaren are now running without snowplough?

Craig, Ramsey Essex | @Gustuso

What benefit will the controversial exhausts the teams are running have on the diffusers if the FIA have stopped the off throttle engine maps. will they be an expected feature in Melbourne?

Lauri from Estonia

Have you heard how much the cars weigh (this year) ie how much ballast can the teams run? How big lap difference can the taller and heavier drivers suffer (Webber, Petrov)? Webber seems to be more than 15kg heavier than Webber, maybe this makes all the difference?

Srinjay/India

Hello to Peter and Craig.
(1)Does Craig think that the Mercedes f duct is giving them an advantage in the corners by seeing the test times and if so whether he can quantify it?
(2) Going thru Mark Webbers blog it seems that even Adrian Newey agrees that the Ferrari is struggling but he did not mention anything about the Mclaren and the Mercedes as well as the Lotus so it would seem that Red Bull are quite wary of them or are they ?

Craig, Ramsey Essex | @Gustuso

What benefit will the controversial exhausts the teams are running have on the diffusers if the FIA have stopped the off throttle engine maps. will they be an expected feature in Melbourne?

Chris Cassingham from Dallas TX

For Craig. What specific aspects of the F2012 have been giving the team so much trouble this pre-season? All we heard was that they are having trouble understanding the car, but nothing specific came from that.

Show notes still have to be added.

Great Program…Thanks for all the cool information…

Some F1 related characters have suggested that Lewis is not a smart person or not as smart as Jenson.. Is there and evidence of this.. so you think it might be racially motivated

Great show. Mercedes still seem to have high tyre wear but the chassis looks a lot better than last years. However their F-Duct only made them as quick as the McLarens through the speed trap?

Great Show. Keep going.

How do you expect Mercedes GP and Ross to do this year? What will you expect from Michael?

Thanks Peter.

Loving the show Peter, one thing tho, I noticed when I watched the live stream once there was an extensive “post show” any chance we can get those in the podcast itself? (apologies if they are already, guess I don’t pay as much attention as I think I do!)

When will the replay be available. Just started following Peter and saw the info about the live show too late. Want to watch it, but can only find episodes 60 and below. What gives?

Chris Cassingham Dallas

Do you see Marussia and HRT as valuable members of the F1 family? They don’t seem to have any hope of securing 10th place in the constructor’s and that all important money and subsequently seem to not have hope of improving.

H2H from Italy

That was a nice and interesting clip by Mark from Williams F1. Hope they will have a better season.

Thanks for the show

Hi Peter and Scarbs
Peter feel free to glue Scarbs to his seat and give us technical information, his incite is the best. With there passive F-Duct is Mercedes trying to make the balance of the car similar when the DRS is closed and when it is open. Theoretically being able to keep the DRS open while corning during qualifying.
