The new McLaren MP4-27-Mercedes

The arrival of any  new McLaren F1 car is always a big occasion - but never more so than right now, on the eve of the 2012 World Championship.  Will Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have the equipment they need to wrest the title from Red Bull Racing?  We'll have our first look at the new challenger when it is launched to the world's media at the stunning McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England, on the morning of Wednesday, February 1; and later that day, in Episode 53 of The Flying Lap, we'll be giving you our verdict, together with a report from the day's festivities.  Joining Peter Windsor in The Flying Lap studio will be our regular F1 technical expert, Craig Scarborough.  We'll be discussing all aspects of the car and the team and taking live questions from F1 fans all over the globe.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Andreas From Cyprus

question to scarbs: didnt the rules say that the exhaust exit should be a circle…so is that exhaust exit the mclaren has on their launch car legal?? and doesnt it look too small??

Owen, Oxfordshire

Scarbs seemed to hint at McLaren going for a blade side impact like what is expected of Ferrari. I assume that this cannot be added from not on due to the crash structure being homologated. Also there seems to be a wider gap around the rear tyres to the diffuser on both launches so far, what is the reason for this?

Graham in London | @TalkingaboutF1

What do Craig and Peter think of Mark Hughes’s comments today that the McLaren MP4-27 doesn’t look radical enough to be able to topple Red Bull this year? And on a related point, how much generally can be told about a car’s likely competitiveness from what it looks like at the launch?

Alex Goldschmidt | @Eyeofalexg1977

Craig, how do you think Red Bull Racing may respond to the new challenger from McLaren, and how much of a legal fight may the Woking squad have from other teams? I honestly think it’s a great looking car, with a great chance of hitting everyone else hard.

Anders, Stockholm, Sweden | @F1Superswede

How much do you think that the MP4-27 will change before the Australian GP, could the actual exhaust outlets have been disguised on the launch car?

Russ from Arizona | @Parnelli98

How long do you both think the exhaust exit “blisters” will last on the MP4-27? The bodywork has great “flow” to it until it reaches those bumps! I’m thinking we’ll see a change at the second test

Andreas, Cyprus

question to scarbs: didnt the rules say that the exhaust exit should be a circle…so is that exhaust exit the mclaren has on their launch car legal?? and doesnt it look too small??

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @Funkmastabuzz

Whats does Scarbs think of the new Mclaren? And its “old” side pods

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Scarbs, whats with the mini air ducts inside the sidepods of new and beautiful mp4-27? Any news about Newey and his steering wheels designs?

Looking at new caterham, f1 cars should be the fastest and most beautiful race cars, right ? As a car designer, you want to design car that is aerodynamically efficient and, well, beautiful ? That’s the fun part

Adam, Leicester, United Kingdom

Question for Scarbs:
Under 2012 regulations, can periscope exhausts be used as tyre warm-up aids?

Adam

Omar, Jordan

Will the Mclaren nose affect the performance negatively or positively compared to the other known style which is the Caterham style, and which stydle do you think the other big 3 teams will use?

Anders, Stockholm, Sweden | @F1Superswede

Could the actual exhausts have been disguised on the MP4-27 launch car?

Rudy Belgium

Compare evolution of Mac Laren and Caterham

Jack, Lancaster

Did you notice a higher rear end to the front similar to the Red Bull. It seems higher off the ground at the rear.

Lisa and Gary USA

Hello Peter and Craig, Will the new McLaren’s design help them with tire management, and will the conservative approach in aero be competitive with the Red Bulls?

Rob Hartz Phx, AZ | @rob_hartz

The exhaust seem laterally mounted and not in a the periscope design which I thought was prescribed by the regs. Could these put dummy exhaust for the launch?

Josh in Minneapolis

Craig, the new McLaren features the continuation of their distinctive “snowplough” under the front nose. Do you have any thoughts on why we haven’t seen other teams try that solution given that McLaren seem to find it so useful?

David Clifford, UK | @motorsportxs

Although most people would say that the MP4-27 is more beautiful than the CT-01 due to the curved nose design, how will that affect air flow? Would you see McLaren’s route the way to go?

Teddy Avila, Porter Ranch

Hi Craig and good morning. Tim Goss stated the car is different than the last years. What defines a proper evolution of a car?

Gordon McCabe, UK

There were news stories yesterday, quoting Geoff McGrath of McLaren Applied Technologies, predicting that the legality of this year’s McLaren might be subject to protest. The story appeared on the Autosport site, and other news outlets, but the articles have now been deleted. Is there an explanation?

Waqar, Luton | @waqarmirza

Hi Chaps, Q for the show:- Wud u say the rear of the MP4-27 resembles a lot of RB7?

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Scarbs, whats with the mini air ducts inside the sidepods of new and beautiful mp4-27? Any news about Newey and his steering wheels designs?

Looking at new caterham, f1 cars should be the fastest and most beautiful race cars, right ? As a car designer, you want to design car that is aerodynamically efficient and, well, beautiful ? That’s the fun part

tim in austin, tx | @Austin_F1

Hi guys! What’s going on under the nose of the MP4-27? Some kind of air intake? Is that new?

Russ from Arizona | @Parnelli98

The MP4-27 looks great, until you get to the protruding “blisters” for the exhaust outlets! How long do you both think that version will last? I’m thinking we’ll see a change at the second test

Rudy Belgium

Mc Laren spoke about borderline techologi/rules did you see some borderline news on the car ??

Rob Hartz Phx, AZ | @rob_hartz

Question for Scarbs…McLaren seems to be one of the few teams to run a horizontal splitter just aft of the wing pylons and the under the nose. is this to direct some airflow higher toward the barge boards or radiator inlets?

lewis in woking | @iamlewis4fake

Will the lower nose alter aero balance and make DRS even more effective?

Anil, Birmingham UK

Hi guys, with the loss of the blown diffuser a lot of rear downforce is lost, how do you think jenson will cope with this compared to lewis because as we all know he really depends on a stable rear end. will we see a bigger gap between them similar to 2010?

f1talks from Poland | @f1talks

Do you think that McLaren is still working with two designing teams switching every year?

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @Funkmastabuzz

Not trying to be negative but, who do you think will have the slowest car out the box, and through the season?

Ewan London

Will this be Mark Webber’s last year? The RedBull will be designed around Vettle so how much of a chance does Webber really have this year…

Shahzad, Bradford | @MdShahzad

What does Scarbs think on the technical side of Kimi’s comeback??? Especially Kimi’s driving style and Lotus GP’s traditional designs.

Nikola, Serbia | @F1_Serbia

For Craig Scarborough: What is your opinion on exhaust?

Adam in North Carolina

Hi Peter and Scarbs!
Is the exhaust configuration on the launch version of the MP4-27 legal to the regulations?

Amer, Sarajevo | @bogi_f1

Hello there,

I have one question for Scarbs, did anyone asked McLaren staff will mp4-27 will be stiff as previous two cars?

Best regards

Fake Charlie Whiting | @charlie_whiting

Craig, what do you make of the quickly withdrawn Autosport story saying that McLaren expects some challenges on some of the MP4-27 design elements? Was it total rubbish, or are there areas of concern?

John Cheltenham | @jcbuckley

What are the advantages of the shorter wheel base vs. the 26? If the car was the same length as the 26 they would have more room to reduce the size of the rear. It is significantly shorter.

Lewis in Woking | @IamLewis4fake

General aero question: after being ‘worked’ by the front wing, is there a noticeable difference in air temperature/air density before it gets ‘worked’ again? thanks, Brilliant Show

Teddy Avila, Porter Ranch Ca.

2012 Ferrari drawing renderings have an integrated side pod wings. do yo McLaren adopting this aero concept?

Paul Einhorn, Silicon Valley CA

Any changes for driver comfort in the cockpit or to the steering wheel layout this year?

Teddy Avila

do you see any room on the mp4-27 to adopt any of the ferraris aero concepts?

dusky Blog, UK | @duskyBlogF1

So would we effectively have 3 Red Bull teams on the grid in 2012? (RBR, STR & Caterham)

Jan, Arnhem Netherlands | @Heron1999

Would’t you think that Neweys large part of the job would have been done by december

Noah Chandler, AZ

Have the FIA release and justification for thier banning of Lotus’ ride height system? Is there any possiblity that Red Bull have already been running a similar system.

Lois, Atlanta, GA USA

Peter and Scarbs — Only McLaren would create a “designer platypus”! Enjoying today’s webcast.

Jack Leslie, UK | @JackLeslieF1

Why does Craig think Mclaren went for the lower nose instead of one like the CT-01? What advantage if any do they gain apart from it looking better?

Paul C. Washington DC | @corley44bc

Do Formula 1 & Indy car engineers ever exchange ideas? Craig do you have any info on Ferrari’s 2012 car?

F1GridWatch | @F1GridWatch

Does @ScarbsF1 think that with rule changes re: nose-height & diffuser/exhaust design that Red Bull will lose part of their edge. In effect, are McLaren having to change less of their design philosophy?

FerMorcillo, Buenos Aires | @FerMorcillo

We saw last year there were some gaps behind the air intake at the top of the airbox. Why did they skip it? are the radiators bigger now that there are not L-shaped?

Teddy Avila, Porter Ranch

How legal does the mp4-27’s exhaust placement looks?

Kevin, Dublin

Hi Peter,Scarbs,
Paddy said the only thing brought over from the Mp4 26 was fuel cell parts. Would you call it an evolution? why?.
Do you think the car you saw today will resemble the car in Oz?

Lisa and Gary USA

Peter, I see you’re sporting a dress-shirt with Speed’s Logo on it, is there an annoucement I’ve missed?

Jan, Arnhem Netherlands | @Heron1999

Does the McLaren still use the hydraulic anti roll system? or is it banned.
(great question for Jenson btw, weak answer though)

Lois, Atlanta, GA USA | @LoisMarketing

It seemed the front wing was just for show this morning. Scarbs, what do you envision as part of ultimate wing designs this year?

Matthew from Brighton | @matthewway

how have mclaren managed to avoid having the ‘platypus’ styled nose cone? like the caterham ct01? it looks very much like the nose cone from the mp4-26

Jack Leslie, UK | @JackLeslieF1

What have Mclaren done to change their wing mirrors, so they solve the problem of the bad visibility?

Dead Man Woking USA

With the loss of downforce at the rear of the car and the softening of the Pirellis, will controlling sliding at the back of the car be even more essential for drivers this year? Paul Hembry recently said that sliding the back end just once will degrade the rear tires considerably.

Noah Chandler, AZ

Do you expet that Turbo engines will result in radical changes in aero packages, due to the different cooling and air intake dimensions or will the cars still look more or less the same.

David Clifford, UK | @motorsportxs

Paddy Lowe was quoted as saying that “2011 was very much a learning year re: the Pirelli tyres”. How much swing has there been to mechanical grip versus aero grip for 2012?

Paul C. Washington DC | @corley44bc

Martin Whitmarsh provided good ideas for Austin GP this morning. Do Lewis or Jensen have any thoughts on promotion of F1 in the States?

Nick. London

With the upward facing exhausts this year, does scarbs think it will make any difference if at all to the "turbulent"air hitting the following car?.

duskyBlogF1, UK | @duskyBlogF1

Although Paddy Lowe said it wouldn’t affect the team, what do you think the effect of losing aerodynamists will be on McLaren’s rate of development this season?

Andreas, Cyprus

question to scarbs: didnt the rules say that the exhaust exit should be a circle…so is that exhaust exit the mclaren has on their launch car legal?? and doesnt it look too small??

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Craig; if you looked through the course of the year; in the very tight corners such as Nurburgring Turn 1; and in the very long, slow corners such as Rivage, the McLaren is just about the only car whose nose can stick to the corner. Would the snowplough and nose be the reason for this?

Also, last year it seemed that the more downforce a car had, the more degradation they suffered in the sweeper tracks such as Suzuka or Barcelona. How do you think that will change this year, with the knowledge the teams now have?

Rob Hartz PHX

If running the rack at the angle and keeping the front wing lower to the ground what’s the benefit of the reactive ride height keeping the wing up underbracing?

Sean, Ottawa

Hi Peter & Scarbs

Do you think the changes that Williams have put in place will be good for them, or is it just the continuation of a gradual slide down the grid? :(

@F1_fans_updates

Hi 1st time watcher great show really enjoying it! What is the facebook page please so I can go follow it please!

Juan from Buenos Aires

Why does the exhaust hot air helps to obtain downforce ???
Nice show guys, hope to see car launches one after the other !!!!

Curtis

In the studio picture, there is black object sticking out from behind the front wheels, under the nose. any ideas what this is? It doesn’t seem to be a snow plough as the same thing isn’t visible on last years car

Benjamin, Connecticut | @BenjaminStipe

1) How much do the nose cone/front wings weigh these days on the new era F1 cars? They look very bulky. 1 crew member/2 crew members? 2) On the MP4-27, what’s the purpose of the downward extensions on the rear wing? Significance? They look like bare carbon fibre.

Frank Germany

Hi Peter,
don´t you think the setup with Kovaleinen was exactly the same as Alonso-Massa Vettle-Webber?
Lewis won thatone didn´t he?

werner czech republic | @erwinwesser

Hello gentlemen, how do u reckon “stiffness” of suspension of new mp-27 … great show, indeed! thank u ;-)

Brad Palmer Missouri USA | @brad_leigh

Do the Caterham engineers go scrambling back to have another look at their calculations and models after the unveiling of a front runner with a major difference like we saw today?

Massai/ Charlotte

Was the general feeling at the Macca unveiling positive generaly speaking?

Boaz Korpel from Israel | @Boazon

Hi Peter & scrabs. Its a great show and you have meany fans in Israel. Just to let you know it

Jan, Arnhem Netherlands | @Heron1999

Quite radical aero changes amongst others; how the teams simulate this when they have no real life data on the new Pirellis? As some cars seems to be VERY sensitive on tyre conditions

Adam in Charlotte, NC

Turning to the new Caterham, what do you make of the similarities between it and recent Red Bulls, particularly in the rear of the car?

Mister Pigz in HK

Hi Craig, Great job on coming up with those 27 drawings in such a short amount of time. Question: Will the hot exhaust gases blowing below the RW be damaging to the DRS components?

Joseph Olin | @JosephOlin

Looking ahead to 2013 – with the change to smaller V6 turbo motors, will the challenges of dealing with (theoretically) higher temperatures impact the look of the cars? JO
PS: I do love the show!

John, United Kingdom

Scarbs :

Why do teams plug a laptop into the car, before a race?

FerMorcillo, Buenos Aires | @FerMorcillo

Hey Scarbs and Peter: first of all brilliant show.

Scarbs, why did McLaren drop the twin airbox inlet we saw in the MP4-26? is it something to do with the new shape of the sidepods?

Thanks!

Gary Marshall Sheffield | @marshallgp

Hi Peter and Craig, as a fan of F1 for well over 40 years I have to say I am so pleased that I found your programme. The content was excellent and well presented for everyone to understand. I am going to Jerez and look forward to perhaps bumping into you.

vedran

if you don’t mind me saying, I’ve been following your shows throughout the past year and this year as well.. your show kicks ass. keep it up, there’s no show like this for F1 fans anywhere.

Fake Charlie Whiting | @charlie_whiting

If Scarbs is busy I’d be happy to stand in for him. Of course, my drawings are all done in crayon.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

@scott …4pmGMT

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Great show!!!! Cant wait for the tests

Tshifaro | @f1_tshif

Forgot to say very good show – 3rd time ever watching live – usually watch as a podcast and have enjoyed every episode from last year – cant wait to see the rest of the car launches especially Ferrari , Redbull and the New era at Williams

Scott/Edinburgh | @javacofe

was it 11am or 4pm (GMT) that Peter said TFL would broadcast from Jerez?

Tshifaro | @f1_tshif

Watched to the #MP4-27 launch – Qs for @ScarbsF1 does the new car has a split floor as suggested in the past. Where do you think the MP4-27 will get more downforce from if the nose is lower than the Redbull(2011). It seems like they need a new person in the aero dept to find that eurika moment and discover more downforce from somewhere otherwise it could be 2011 again.

Teddy Avila, porter ranch ca

thank you craig. I will be sharing a lot of you great articles on my facebook page, FORMULA 1 ENTHUSIASTS. Thank you Peter and looking forward to the 2012 with you both.

Martin Whitmarsh

The MP4-27 Technical Specifications are up on our mclaren.com site

Fake Charlie Whiting | @charlie_whiting

Great show again, gents. The rest of F1 could learn a lot about fan engagement from The Flying Lap. And that’s not a fake opinion.

Adrian Newey

Thank you.
:)

Anil, Birmingham UK

Thanks for answering my question guys, love the show, its great! I can’t wait for the test coverage and thanks for keeping us up to date in what is usually a quiet pre season.

Sean, Ottawa

Great show guys, thanks a lot.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

That I am looking forward to!!!!

Luca Italy

The only show that talks about the side aspect of the F1: thanks a lot.
I hope we’ll see a funnier WC with lots of technical news.

danny @Martigny (Switzerland)

Thank you for the show and all the comments about the latest Mc Laren.

I don’t care about who wins the WC but I hope that the racing will be much closer in 2012 than in 2011.

bifta

wicked wicked. Junglist massive.

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

If I remember correctly, we were told when the new regs were released that blowing the rear wing would have little to no effect on the car.

Chris Chalmers Kent | @chris_chalmers

My first impressions on the mclaren this year; No stone unturned and no gimmicks! Reminds me of the first glimpse of the red bull last year

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Hi all!!!
Missed this last week …..Hope Peter is feeling better

Pete Englandland

I have watched every episode of the flying lap and just want to say thanks. To you peter and craig and all of the guests and tech guys/gals who make TFL happen, keep up the good work and bring on episode 100.
