SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
rayan BELGIUM | @reretrad

with this years regulation is a driver style for example the off and on throttle without the blown diff-user will make a difference for example mark last year in silverston

Czio Belgium Mons | @czio

Great show THX

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

IN SEASON TESTING – do either of you believe we’ll ever see F1 go back to unlimited in season testing? What are your thoughts? would this not even out the costs of developing parts over and over in a trial and error approach?

Steven Kewley , Nantwich

Andrew Benson has said he thinks Redbull has the best part of 1 second on the Mclaren at the moment on race pace?

Steven Kewley , Nantwich

Awesome guys, just awesome. keep up the excellent work.

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

Front Wing – is it the wing or the entire nose cone that flexes?

chris london | @Chrisozz

Evening guys… Feet show
I realise all the teams want to keep certain things under thier hats but surely not testing the cars in thier intended race spec is a dissadvantage?

WO3FULL

could the teams choose to have more than 2 exhaust exits?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

Scarbs, still no interest from the FIA on your earlier solution to front wing flex test

Dimitris Shepherds Bush | @Darkest_Star4

Hey guys, great episode as usual, any info on how this years’ Ferrari treats its tyres..?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

I have added links to your websites/blogs. Do either of you realize how many fans you have and how respected your views and opinions are? Your approachability and access to fans on the flying lap and online (twitter) should be a model for others. Why doesn’t F1 do more for people like you to help sell the sport to new and existing fans and markets.

Pratik, London | @Patelcsope

Hi, due you think Mclaren still using the third pedal for the corner??

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Peter, just to clarify, do you know Mladen Jergovic, he is Croatian f1 commentator and often claims that you two are close friends? just to claryfy

Matt USA

Is there a real sense of competition amongst the machanics during initial testing not knowing what the other teams have designed in their cars over the winter?

Michael Los Angeles

Will there be particular tracks where changes in engine mapping will affect performance in a definitive manner – where and how?

James Ogden | @oggie509

Concerning the mclaren exhaust once more, is the part of the slot that is opposite the actual exhaust exit allowed to be open and is there potential for that to channel elsewhere?

Dr John Kirby Nottingham, East Midlands UK | @csljohnkirby

I truly believe Alonso is going to be competitive and thing that Vettel will have to continue to work hard, the one race that I really want to see is Austin, and for it to be a sucess, ~F1 is needed in the US and ~F1 needs the US

FrankF1, Scotland | @thebestbrew

Looking at the illustration of the downwashing exhaust, does the force of the airflow over the sidepods actually overcome the force of the exhaust exit gases to the extent the drawing shows?

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @Funkmastabuzz

Do you think that DRS will become more refined this year, and does it look the same as last year or has there been an evolution?

Czio Belgium Mons | @czio

Every years, he rules are changing and engeniers dont have time to extract the most power of their works. I was thinking that the goal was to reduce cost. What do you think about that ?

Raveen Dallas, Texas | @mantikos

What do you think about the Merc W03 overall and its chances this year. Also, what do you think about thier FW and exhaust?

FrankF1, Scotland | @thebestbrew

Any view on the ‘balance’ of cars towards particular drivers (obviously excluding RB and Ferrari)

Czio Belgium Mons | @czio

Can you give some words about about Caterham

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

FOR YOU BOTH – What have you witnessed that the time sheets don’t show?

rayan BELGIUM | @reretrad

is the engine ECU restriction are more effective than the positioning of the exhaust

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

RB8 is there a concern that the heat from the exhaust can negatively affect suspension or brakes?

Pratik, London | @Patelcope

Hi Peter and Scard, will Formula 1 Car ever have on board cameras like Nascar and Indycar that revolve 360 degrees which could give TV audience more viewing.

Jon E - Herts, UK

HRT addmitted on twitter http://www.facebook.com/HRTF1Team/posts/343349572377030 that rendering was last years car spotted by F1Fanatic.co.uk

Sean in California

Hello Peter
Great show like always. Now that we have DRS and the cars can pass at Barcelona. Can we please get rid of that useless chicane before the pit lane.

Literal F1, Nottingham | @literalf1

I know you’ve discussed this earlier but the hole in the Red Bull which is apparently for “cooling”.

An F1 engineer remarked that an inlet for “cooling” would fill the driver’s legs with water in the rain.

On a light question to Scarbs,
What’s your favourite ever car, from a technical perspective? :)

Bob Keating | @GPflagger

Mercedes?
Did you see anything to suggest it will challenge for #1 this year?

Force India?

Lauri

Any news on the Ferrari engine – how they can use smaller air intakes in sidepods? What about Ferrari’s third radiator at back (mentioned in Ferrari’s video on Youtube)? If Merc is the most powerful engine and Renault has best fuel economy where does the Ferrari position itself?

Luke Attwood, Leicester | @LukeAttwood

Question for Scarbs. Do you know what this removable slot is revealing on the McLaren? Looks like something on the fuel tank? http://img4.auto-motor-und-sport.de/Formel-1-Test-Barcelona-22-2-2012-Lewis-Hamilton-McLaren-fotoshowImage-37d5e347-572242.jpg

Joseph Pearce, Sheffield | @josephdeepearce

What has been the hardest new feature for Scarbs to analyse/understand?

Lauri

Could Ferrari’s new windtunnel still be giving them wrong results? I think it was talked about on this show by the guru-windtunnel-designer (Peter’s guest) how Luca Montezemolo went and changed his tunnel design so it would be an architectural building or something like that? The crazy shape of it can’t be good for it.

Michael in California

Any new news about Rubens Barrichello for 2012,13,14? Tony Kanaan’s 2012 Indy just got its livery.

Danny@Martigny (Switzerland)

Any news about the new Marussia and HRT ? Will they match the March 721G record ?

The 1972 March 721G F-1 car was built for Mike Beuttler in 9 days and the suffix G stood for Guiness Book of Records.

It was built from a 722 Formula 2 chassis with a Cosworth DFV engine and larger fuel tanks.

Czio Belgium Mons | @czio

I read LRGP find the problem by visual check Why dont they vieuw they at factory ??

Marvin, Germany | @Mauin

Who is the driver that looks strongest to you right now?
Which car has the most potential from a technical point of view?

Stephen, Atlanta | @bernie_p

Are teams blowing the diffusers through the rear suspension or just the rear suspension/brake ducts?

Adam in Birmingham Alabama

Do you or Scarbs feel that the pullrod suspension on the front of the Ferrari is hindering the car more than the team and drivers expected? And do you think it was or is the right way to go?

Derek - Boston, MA | @redman1401

Is there any obvious reason for Red Bull’s vents in their nose aside from cooling the driver, maybe cooling the KERS?

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @Funkmastabuzz

Does anybody know what was wrong with the Renault?

Russ from Arizona | @Parnelli98

Peter – you had mentioned in your blog about yesterday’s test the McLaren exhaust still has its distinctive rasp. Is it different than the other Merc powered cars as well? And do you think they are “messing” around with engine mapping (within the rules of course) to keep its rasp?

Sam from Newcastle

Question for Peter, or Craig: From watching the cars test, have you noticed the inconsistent handling of the F2012 that Ferrari talked about?

Fantastic show as ever, really enjoyable

Luke Attwood, Leicester | @LukeAttwood

A question for Scarbs. Could you explain what Mercedes are trying to do here with the duel pipes exiting their engine cover tail exit? https://twitter.com/#!/Diosfenix/status/172336881827201025/photo/1/large

Richard from Manchester | @richardbraddock

Hi Scarbs & Peter,

I read someone comment recently (an amateur mind you) that the low nose of the McLaren should give them a slightly lower CoG and perhaps help then with mechanical grip in wet races. Does this argument have any merit to it in your opinion?

Stanislav Bulgaria

I saw a picture of the McLaren from today’s test and they had a temperature sticker on the rear light. Are they doing something interesting with the exausts ?

Richard from Manchester | @richardbraddock

Hi Guys,

Probably a question for either of you. Teams often talk about having a ‘50%’ wind tunnel or similar. Ferrari famously upgraded theirs recently from 50% to 60% to try and avoid last year’s correlation problems. Is it so difficult to build a 100% wind tunnel (then you could test with the real car rather than a model) or is this a silly question?

Al from Denver | @https://twitter.com/#!/Khan_F1

Question for Craig (by the way, congrats for your articles on Autosport): what will the reported longer wheelbase on the Ferrari F2012 mean regarding tyre warm-up and aerodynamic behaviour?

Question for both: Do you guys believe that the severe restriction of off-throttle and exhaust blown diffusers will finally help closing the performance gap between the top grid teams?

Eager to watch your show, great job as always.

Pedja, Serbia | @jabbadothut

What was yours impression about performance of Ferrari’s front pull rod and was worth it introducing it to gain small aero benefit.

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondumbara

Questions for Craig:
1. What techniques/strategies do the teams use to estimate the fuel weight of the other cars on the testing runs? Could they for example compare the power-limited acceleration of the other cars against the traction-limited phase of said acceleration?
2. What do you think can be read from the race simulation that Vettel did earlier, and the one that Lewis Hamilton did?
3. There was a run where Hamilton and Vettel did similar times – but Hamilton seemed to be running more wing. Are we at a situation where perhaps the McL and RBR are both neck and neck in terms of laptime; except the McL runs a bit more wing to do so? Despite the extra wing; the McLaren seemed strong on the straights too – it seemed like it was S2 and S3 that it was losing out in.

And for both Peter and Craig – Who’s hot, and who’s not? Will we see Vettel be the first driver to ever get his first 3 titles in succession? (there’s been 3 in succession; but never the first 3 titles!)

Fernando

Can the pull-rod suspensions have a different influence on tyres wear? I’m referring to Ferrari.
Thank you.

Jack Leslie, UK | @JackLeslieF1

By the way, can you tell Scarbs it was nice meeting him on Monday

rayan BELGIUM | @reretrad

will the drivers style this year could change the game

Raveen Dallas, TX | @mantikos

what is your opinion of the W03?

Mike from NYC | @MiguelAntonio

Hey guys, great tech stuff on this episode. Keep it up! Are either of you going to make the trip out to Austin this year?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

What are your thoughts on F1 in Bahrain this year?

Steven Nantwich

How can Jenson beat Lewis in Qualifying this season when last season he only beat him 6 times?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

HAve either of you seen what the new Pirelli’s look like after a long stint, how do they compare to last year’s in terms of wear and marbles?

Luca, Italy

Even in that tests we’ve been seeing “flexible” wings, do you think FIA will change again the regulation?

Wayne in Derbyshire UK

Do you think Vitaly can do as good a job as Jarno would have in the Caterham?

Mark, London

Lewis and Sebastian had a few very similar race sim stints before McLaren went their own way in testing (ie refuelling before stints), looks close, what are your thoughts?

Dave, Sydney (Cattai) | @davecolvin

Hi Peter, I love the show, but generally listen aftertime due to timezones, via podcast. But I would love it if there is a place/page/location o get the photos you show on the show (that I hear about). I know Scarbs are on his blog, but the others.

Cheers
Dave

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

If you had to guess, what would you say the top 5 pecking order would be as things sit right now?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

How worried should Ferrari Fans be about the current apparent state of the F2012 and the comments coming from the team regarding the amount of work left to be done? Or do they have the best poker face at the moment?

Ernie Canada | @goggs_on_f1

Are either of you surprised at the pace of the Force India today? or do you believe the super softs were mainly responsible?

Chris Chalmers from Gravesend Kent | @chris_chalmers

I remember Mclaren at their launch saying they have reworked the underbody aerodynamics. Could Scarbs give us an insight of what goes on underneath!?

Stephen, Atlanta | @bernie_p

Pete & Scarbs – are you guys partial to any teams?

Czio Belgium Mons | @czio

Sahara have great time can you give some words about this team

f1talks | Poland | @f1talks

Did you noted that Red Bull today was testing new wheel nuts attached to the rim? Mercedes style…

Kevin, Dublin

Some teams have said that they will wait till the third test, until they reveal the true package(car). Are you expecting any suprises?

Wayne in Derbyshire UK

What are the books in the front right of the general shot?

Matt USA

Any advancement in helmet designed cameras?

Michael in California

Could the lotus problem be related to electrical or fiber optic cable, as I under stand some cabling is laid in the chassis and can’t just be changed out in a afternoon.

Srinjay/India

A question for both of you
What do you think of the mercedes even though we have seen it running for only 2 days ?

Steven Nantwich

Regarding Mclaren’s low nose – will this give more Mechanical grip and straight line speed compared to a higher nose.

Thanks

Graham Keilloh in London | @TalkingaboutF1

I’m fascinated by Peter’s recent blog articles about being out next to the track during testing and assessing which cars are behaving well and which less so. Are you able to explain what sort of things you look for when doing this? I ask as it’s something I’d love to be able to do myself when watching racing cars!

Thanks very much Peter and Craig for another very enjoyable Flying Lap.

Bob Keating | @GPflagger

conjugal visits for Ferrari??

Simon, London

Hi guys, have recently found your show and have to say it’s fantastic…by far the best and most informative show of it’s kind.

Just wondering is there a minimum number of cameras that must be on the car or can teams opt out? If so, does the different weight have any impact or is it so minimal that it’s not an issue?

Alex, Leeds | @ACooperF1

How far behind will Lotus be after missing this test? Surely can’t be good for them in terms of development

Jack Leslie, UK | @JackLeslieF1

Sky Sports F1 revealed they will be broadcasting in 5.1 surround sound, what do you guys think about the planned channel?

Marvin, Germany | @Mauin

Who is the driver that looks strongest to you right now?
Which car has the most potential from a technical point of view?

Sam from Newcastle

Question for Peter, or Craig: From watching the cars test, have you noticed the inconsistent handling of the F2012 that Ferrari talked about?

Fantastic show as ever, really enjoyable

Show notes still have to be added.

Very good show! Keep up the good work!

Vedran, Croatia

So, they’re calling the supposed Mercedes “secret” a “W-duct”. This seems to be a video explaining how it works. Maybe you could use it in your next episode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ9cFis55xM

Nikos uk

Rosberg did a 1.24.7 with 18 laps of fuel, the best Red Bull and McLaren did on a 10+ lap stint run was 26.1 and 26.6 respectively.

Wayne in Derbyshire uk

I discovered the show about 2 weeks ago, via the speed tv app for android. I immediately back watched about a half dozen episodes. The show has the content I always wanted from the hours of tv coverage I watch. Today I asked questins of the show for the first time, both of which have been taken up and answered. I’m slightly dissapointed we won’t get the 2 shows we were promised but you can be assured of my future participation. Thanks Peter, keep up the good work. (and Scarbs – get your blog upto date – then it would be the best on the web)

Danny from Martigny (Switzerland)

Thank You again to all the people involved in the show. Great episode.

Dr. John Kirby (Nottingham, East Midlands) | @csljohnkirby

Not sure if it is my Internet, or my PC, but has suffered a continued lost of sound during both the show and aftershow tonight, can’t wait to watch again on iTunes in about 24hrs.

Luca, Italy

Few words, but enough (I suppose): Great show as always.

Absolutley wonderful show and content!
Very personal, very transparent…
This is what F1 really is about (technology) and the key essence what the sports head figures forget to transmit to the audience.
Glad to be part of your broadcast !

Wayne Derbyshire

Could the red bull slots be to cool the troublesome (last year) kers?

Tom in Wales

Great show – loving the detail – new viewer here and can’t believe I’ve not had TFL in my life before!

Bob keating USA | @gpflagger

BRILLIANT! So much knowledge packed into one show!

Adrian Newey

Craig, we’re hiring.

A side caption listing for the time sheets for testing.

Sean in California

What is wrong with the Lotus and will they be able to have a private test like Mercedes.

Lois, Atlanta, GA | @LoisMarketing

As you guys remember, I asked about changes to the front wings. Now that we’ve overcome the “noses” interesting to see the focus change to the wings. Interesting webcast as always!

Funkmastabuzz,Bristol | @funkmastabuzz

Been looking forward to this show. Hope iv not missed anything.
