F1 Testing & Tech Update

We are thrilled to have Willem Toet online for today’s episode. Toet is an ex Benetton. Ferrari, BAR and Sauber engineer and current Managing Director of the RML Group. Joining us in our London studio, we welcome back Craig Scarborough, the F1 tech analyst expert, from the popular ScarbsF1 blog. With photos and drawings, we’ll delve into the final updates on testing and talk about how the teams will fare as they put in their final preparations for the upcoming 2011 season.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Rene, Netherlands

Q: With all these extra pitstops in races, is there not the risk it will become a lottery? Pitlanes will be cluttered with cars. Cars will end up behind other cars that are on a slightly different strategy.

Tim Shropshire | @timmyhiggins

Will we see Willem out on the hills this year in his Pilbeam?

Gary Tatman

Hi Peter, because such a small amount of time is spent corner, versus time spent in straight aways, is yaw really that important? Lisa and Gary

Pascal from Germany

Hello Gentlemen,

i dont know if my questions was already mentioned, how much downforce were lost throughout the knew rules?

KennyB

Toro Rosso has been strong in testing. But I don’t thint they don’t have KERS. Could they be a surprise this year?

Maccaman

Peter, I have to hint that Torro Rosso is the third fastest car. It’s going to be the surprise of the season.

Leigh (London) | @TheF1Archive

Hi guys,
Good show again.

Could Craig guide us through the crash test process at the start of the year?

Thanks,

Kf1

HRT tested the same car for 2 tests without any updates etc… What would have they tested? Would they have looked only at the tires, considering that they are going radically different for this year’s car?

Nicholas in Singapore

At the point where the car behind has pulled alongside, and JUST passed the car in front, then wouldn’t the car that WAS in front be elligible to use the DRS?

Kf1 | @Kedharf1

Also please consider how Geoff Willis’s experience in assessing HRT’s 2011 car.

Luiz, Brazil

Hearing Willem talk about friction and energy, any reason why the fastest car is also the cleanest and smoothest looking?

Kf1

What do you think about HRT’s 2011 car … they say they have gotten help from Williams, in terms of their rear end.

Nicole in London

2 questions with the DRS

1. Will the DRS detract from the driver? Will people start saying, “That was only the DRS doing the overtake. The driver skill wasn’t part of it.”

2. Will the DRS help the better overtakers, such as the Hamiltons or Kobayashis, or will they help the less-capable overtakers more?

Nicholas in London

In 2010 there were corners such as Eau Rouge, 130R, Curva Grande, and other kinks that were flat out, with or without the f-duct engaged. But the DRS would decrease more downforce than the f-duct. Could they take those still flat out?

Amer, Sarajevo

Question for mr. Craig, can you explain McLaren U-bend exhaust solution.

keith

kEITH AGAIN, I WANT TO THANK wILLEM PERSONALLY FOR THE TIME i WORKED WITH HIM AT BAR, HE WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO COULD MAKE A COMMERCIAL FOOL UNDERSTAND AERO

Nicole in London

In 2008 McLaren had “torque control” by using a paddle on the wheel. Is that actually still allowed now?

Nicholas in London

Will it ever be possible to get CFD that is 100% accurate? Is it just a calibration issue, or is there a more inherent issue in CFD?

Richard Dunn

To Willem, Who was Albert? and how big was it ? (Saubers CFD computer is the answer) – did it increase cycles times for R&D compared to wind tunnel time.

Nicholas in London

Are there now any disadvantages to having KERS in 2011? CofG? Anything?

Amer, Sarajevo

Q: Can mr Toet explain how far is CFD simulation from real thing?

Richard From Boston | @salukiconvert

How long might it take for a team to try out and implement radial changes they want to copy off of a rival car (i.e. Renaults forward exhaust). Do you think we’ll see any other teams with forward exhaust next test? I assume it’s not as simple as trying out the shark fin like teams did in the ’08 season

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Toro Rosso and McLaren have kind of a “straight through” approach to let the air through to the back, as opposed to the Red Bull/Williams approach. But wasn’t the last double floor car (I believe it was the F92 Ferrari) wasn’t it very slow?

Clio from Northumberland

When cars last raced with KERS the drivers found them more difficult to drive, possibly due to the weight and positioning of the components within the car. Are we likely to to see the same thing when it is re-introduced this season?

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Question to Craig – how much of tyre preservation is driver, and how much is car? Will the rules actually favor slower drivers?

Heather from Coventry | @yellow_shades

Could you explain the purpose of the movable rear wing, why have they been introduced? And what do you think about artificial rain being used during F1 races?

Gyan from India

Toro rosso is using a double floor in this year’s car… i want to ask what are the advantages or disadvantages of the double floor design???

Russ Ludwig, Arizona USA | @Parnelli98

Has Willem ever visited the Pikes Peak HIll Climb that is run in the States every July? Great event!

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

So, the million dollar question to Scarbs. Who’s hot, and who’s not?

Cyril

Great show Peter, thank you!
Q: Reanult’s radiators – aren’t they much bigger than those on the McLaren for example? Is it something related to the front exit ehausts?

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Not quite a car tech question, but from the driver side. Many people say that Button is a smoother driver than Hamilton, and will take care of his tyres better. But would his constant steering lock not prolong the amount of time there is a lateral loading on the tyre?

Josh - Leeds

Hi guys :)

Question to Craig:
How difficult is it to draw such complicated and intricate designs of F1 cars & is it done by hand?

Thanks

Mario Balza. Venezuela | @mario_eb

How possible is to bring free tests back to F1. Why teams seem not to care so much about the lack of testing on track like in the past? Thanks.

Louis Suddaby from Hull | @LouisSuddaby23

Hi everyone, loving the show

Do you think McLaren may have gone too radical with the MP4-26? (Sidepods, exhausts, etc)

There have been occasions in the past where Williams (2004) and McLaren themselves in 2003 were perhaps too innovative for their own good?

keith

Willem. Wheres your bowtie?

Thomas in Kent | @TGolightly

Hey!
Is there any news on when HRT will announce their second driver? :)
